Some big news – First Second has asked MK and I to serialize Americus online. Details are still being hashed out, but we’re hoping to have the website up and ready to go around the middle of July. I am pretty excited, though I’ll admit it’s kind of funny too. I think the standard approach is to do your webcomic and finish it up with hopes of having a publisher picking it up. We’re doing the reverse – we’ve got the book finished and have a publisher, but are doing the webcomic to help drum up interest and support for the book before it’s release date next fall.

Like I said, I’m pretty excited. I’ll give you more details as they pop up.

I also did some spot illustrations for an entertainment piece for this week’s Willamette Week. There is a free, all ages music festival happening in the St. John’s neighborhood this weekend. If you get the chance, check it out. I haven’t been to St. Johns in years and years, but it’s a beautiful area and the third annual No. Fest seems pretty awesome.

I’ve finished the next page of A Date in Time and Space, but I’m gonna put it on hold for now while I work on getting saveapathea.com ready to get rolling.

Every year I set out to do a nice conceptual image that illustrated heritage, but every year I end up doing some sort of collage image. Is it possible to show Asian heritage without having a cheesy montage of things like dragons and chopsticks or a crowd scene of different people? I’ve even tried to google ‘heritage illustrations’ to see if I can get any ideas.

NOTHING!

Anyhow, here’s the illustrations from the previous years, with the one I did for this year at the end.

I’m actually not very pleased with it. I thought, thought, thought that I would be able to come up with something really great, but as you can see it seems like every other year is kind of a sucky one. I guess that means next year’s will be better. But maybe that’s the thing – maybe there’s no way around summing up the history and heritage of an entire continent’s worth of people without hitting the major icons of those cultures. I’d like to hear anyone’s thoughts on the subject.

Other bit of news – I finally updated my website! I didn’t really change it around much, mainly the colors and decor image, but I’m really, really happy with it. I feel like it’s simple and professional, but still has some of the goofiness that defines my work. Here’s the main image I did for it.

Also, I did some work for the Willamette Week this week, as well as some pro bono work for the great folks at Hyphen Magazine for their next issue. Check them out.

EDIT: Forgot there’s a NDA with the illustration. The issue should be out the second or third week of April. Will keep you posted and repost the image when I am allowed to.

I’m taking a vacation with the misses next week so don’t expect anything from me.

In other news, I had a pretty difficult assignment for the WW this week. It was low concept, but the drawing was pretty intense [cars! bridges! bicycles!]. It’s not perfect, but I had to turn it around in a couple of hours and all things considered, I’m proud of the drawing.

I don’t have the coloring quite done yet, but I’ll update the post if I can get it done before I leave on my trip east. Which brings me to…

I will be crashing the last stop of the Punchbuggy Tour at Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn on Sunday the 11th of October at 5 pm. I’ll be reading some old One of the Johns material, as well as an excerpt from the graphic novel I’ve been working on with MK Reed, Americus [to be published by First Second Books 2012].

some big news: First Second will be publishing Americus! MK and i signed out contracts last week. i still have a lot of drawing ahead of me, but it’s nice to know it has a home. the book won’t be out untl 2012, so don’t hold your breaths.

oh, and here’s some more illustrations that have popped up in the willamette week. one was for an anime festival in town and another was for an article about a program that teaches people in english, including slang:

the portland fun book 3 is also out. there was a release party this last monday, but seeing how i don’t really do that whole ‘fun’ business, i didn’t make it.

but you can pick up copies around town at great places like powell’s and floating world comics.

it also doesn’t look like we’re going to have time to be making our regularly scheduled calendar this year, which is a total bummer, but we’re planning on doing something similar but a little simpler and more time managable over the next couple of weeks. we’ll be posting any sort of news and updates about that here, so check back later.

As you can see from the above menu, there are still a few sections we are working on, but for now our main thrust will be this here blog.

Along with updates about news and projects, we also plan to use this space as an informal artblog. We’ll be posting anything from works-in-progress to finished pictures, sketches, comix… whatever really. Just do what we do and let the site take its own shape. Hopefully we’ll earn your attention again after taking such a long hiatus.
