Just sketchbookin’ it [1.0]
(Sep 04, 2009)
My sketchbooks tend to have lots of doodles in them, where I let my mind wander. Drawing with a brush for no reason at all except to draw is pretty meditative for me. You’ll see a lot of the same of imagery – lots and lots of faces [mostly faces of women and old men], hands, and weird monsters or ghosts [or faces of them]… oh, and lots of ramblings of self-doubt and loathing [please ignore those]. These scans are from my most recent sketchbook.
I also love to do observational drawing, though I don’t make as much time for it as I should. I was recently in Seattle visiting my mom, who was there for a conference at UW, and while I was waiting for her to get out of a meeting I was doing quick 5 second caricatures of people as they left class. The idea is that even though the drawings are really rough, as long as I can capture the main details of the face I can go back and reference later in other projects to vary the faces of the characters.
And my plug of the week: Please head to your nearest bookstore or online book retailer and pick up Eleanor Davis‘ book, The Secret Science Alliance! Two other very talented cartoonists had their hands on the production of this very awesome book [ Drew Weing, & Joey Weiser ], so make sure you check out their stuff as well.
You can buy it for grown ups! You can buy it for kids! Just buy it!
What can I say, Jonny boy? I love your stuff! Someday you will be famouser and I will tell my kids that we were buddies!
